Solar Pyrography

The fancy term for what I do! Pyrography is the official term for burning decoration into things. Most people have at least a passing familiarity with traditional pyrography. A nib is heated by fire or by electricity and used to draw upon wood, but when it becomes Solar Pyrography the entire process gets a whole lot more interesting. Using the power of the sun, amplified by a magnifying lens I focus heat directly at the object I wish to decorate.

If you've had a chance to watch my work in action you may notice a bright spot as I work across the wood. You are only seeing part of what I see. I wear number ten welding lens to protect my eyes, but also to help me see my work. In the dimmed light of my glasses there is a smaller bright circle that is the most intense part of the heat I am focusing. It is that small dot that "draws" my marks.
